Tools Needed

  • 16ga or 18ga Nailer & 1"-2" fasteners
  • Wood Glue
  • Angle Grinder with 40grit Flap Disc
  • Random Orbit Sander
  • Flush Cut Pliers
  • 6" or smaller quick clamps (4)

It will be more like $75 for cedar depending on availability.  The 3V buckyball dome kits are $149 + Shipping.  Dome kits come with two triangle templates custom made for your struts.  All the struts will come in the box separated by cardboard sheets.  The cardboard sheets should be removed one at a time and assembled into bins for each type of strut so they don’t get mixed up.  Assembly of a kit should take 6-10 hours depending on how fast you learn the beveled frame method.  After assembly sanding and finish work should take another 2-3 hours depending on the level of detail you are looking for.  Basic instructions for triangle, component, and full dome assembly are included.  These kits are a great way to learn the beveled frame method without having to commit to a large up front cost.

You can use the divider as a bin for your struts, or use your own bins. Keep each type of strut separated!!

What it should look like cut
Mark the top of the strut when making each triangle. This way you can make sure you don’t put a triangle in the wrong direction. The hex triangles are almost equilateral.
Tools that are helpful for small scale dome building
Flush cutters for misplaced brad nails.
Woodglue edges before 16ga or18ga 1 1/4″ fasteners

after knocking all the joints down with a 40 grit flap disc go back and fill any gaps with woodglue and sawdust, or construction adhesive and sawdust.

Strike a straight line across what will be the bottom, then use a compass to make arcs the appropriate length to define your triangle
Orient your mitered struts
Tack down the mitered struts
Cut pieces of plywood, glue and tack them in place
Mark the compound miters
Remove the tacked down struts.
